Bangladesh exports to South America reach $195m in first quarter

Bangladesh ship goods worth US$195.17 million to 11 South American destinations during the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27. Just News BD first reported the figures on Wednesday based on data from the Export Promotion Bureau.

Shipments to Brazil totaled $70.82 million to lead the region, while Chile followed with $51.87 million. Peru brought in $24.24 million, Colombia accounted for $18.05 million, Uruguay recorded $11.63 million, and Argentina reached $10.28 million.

Apparel continued to lead total sales in the region. Woven garments brought in about $84.53 million, and knitted items generated roughly $70.10 million during the July to September period.

Pharmaceutical items added $6.58 million to the total, while shoes and related goods generated $5.71 million. Other shipments included textile articles, leather goods, and travel bags.

The government aims to expand sales beyond traditional buyers in North America and Europe. To push non-traditional products like jute goods, leather items, home decor, and handicrafts, four local firms joined Home Show Brazil 2026 in São Paulo.

The exhibition ran from August 11 to 13 at Distrito Anhembi. Jihan Plastic Industries, Mother Tannery, Rainbow Jute, and Classical Handmade Products displayed items across five booths at the event.

Mohammad Hasan Arif, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of the Export Promotion Bureau, stated that the agency wants to build a stronger presence in emerging regions through trade fairs. He noted that relying too much on garments and a small group of buyers leaves export earnings vulnerable to shocks.

He advised exporters to study market demand, buyer preferences, and local business practices before joining global trade events. Brazil and Chile combined for $122.69 million, making them the primary focus for future promotional work in the region.
